For many Victorians, the car isn’t just a way to get around—it’s a mobile office, a tool shed on wheels, or the only way to get to work for those early morning or late-night shifts. However, as the cost of living continues to rise, keeping that vehicle on the road is becoming more expensive.
The Victorian Government has recently announced new measures to put money back into the pockets of drivers. Whether you are a daily commuter or an apprentice just starting your career, here is everything you need to know about the upcoming 20% Rego Rebate and the Free Rego for Apprentices scheme.
1. The 20% Vehicle Registration Rebate (Coming Soon!)
The headline news for most Victorian drivers is a one-off rebate designed to ease financial pressure.
What is it?
Eligible Victorians can claim a 20% rebate on their vehicle registration. This initiative is expected to save the average driver around $186 per vehicle.
When can you apply?
Applications are scheduled to open from Monday, 1 June to Friday, 31 July 2026. The rebate applies to registrations for the 2025–26 period.
Which vehicles are eligible?
The rebate isn’t just for standard cars. It covers a wide range of “light vehicles” registered in an individual’s name, including:
• Cars and Station Wagons
• 4WDs and SUVs
• Motorcycles
• Utes and Vans
• Light Trucks
How do you get it?
You will be able to apply through the Service Victoria app or the official Service Victoria website. Make sure your MyServiceVic account is set up and ready to go before June!
2. 100% Free Registration for Apprentices
If you are a trade apprentice, the news is even better. Since July 2023, the government has expanded its support for the next generation of tradies by moving from a 50% discount to a 100% discount on vehicle registration.
Who is eligible?
To qualify for free rego, you must:
• Be an apprentice registered with the Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority (VRQA).
• Use your own car, ute, or van (under 4.5 tonnes) for work purposes.
• OR regularly drive to/from work between 8:30 PM and 5:30 AM.
• Hold a current Victorian driver’s licence (L-platers are not eligible).
Why it matters:
This can save apprentices up to $865 per year. For someone just starting out, that money can be better spent on high-quality tools or further training.
How to Prepare
To ensure you don’t miss out on these savings, here are three quick steps:
1. Check your details: Make sure your vehicle is registered in your name and your address is up to date with VicRoads.
2. Download the Service Victoria App: This will be the fastest way to claim the 20% rebate when the portal opens in June 2026.
3. Apprentices, talk to your boss: If you’re applying for the apprentice discount, VicRoads will verify your work use with your employer, so let them know to expect a check-in.
Staying mobile shouldn’t break the bank. For more details on eligibility and to stay updated, visit the official Service Victoria website.
Safe driving!
